Our Homestays in Cuba: Welcome to the Family

Immerse Yourself in Cuban Life

While many study abroad programs house students in dormitories and hotels, students who travel to Cuba with AUSM stay with homestay families in a historic Black working class Barrio called Marianao, about 20 minutes from the city center of Havana. As an organization, our relationships with our homestay families have been cultivated over many years through solidarity work with organizations and individuals in the neighborhood. Unlike AirBnb or other commercial lodging options, our homestay families participate in our program with the goal of building solidarity with western students and immersing them in the day-to-day realities of Cuban life in a regular working class neighborhood.

For the duration of their stay, AUSM’s host families care for study abroad students as though they are a part of the family. Homestay families cook meals for students, accommodate a wide spectrum of dietary needs, wash students’ laundry, show them around the neighborhood, engage in conversations about Cuban culture, society, politics, and history, celebrate their birthdays, help them learn Spanish, introduce them to Cuban telenovelas, play chess or dominos with them, care for them when they are sick, and more. Each homestay family offers a completely unique and distinct experience, whether they are a large family or a small family, have children or pets, or a variety of other factors. What they all have in common is a shared orientation toward making students feel welcome, cared for, and supported during their stay in the program!

Meet a Homestay Family: Ramón, Mayra, and Samuel

My name is Ramón Vicente García Ramos, and I live in Marianao. I am 74 years old. My family and I are founders of the homestay network—a very close-knit family—that welcomes students from various universities in the United States to our country. We live in an apartment, and our family includes Mayra Pérez Mirabal, 70 years old, who is retired. She loves cooking and preparing a variety of dishes, enjoys the beach, exercises with a group of senior friends, and loves the color green. Our grandson, Samuel Páramo Correa, who lives with us, is 20 years old. He enjoys the color blue, the beach, dancing, and parties.

I also love the beach, fishing, and culinary arts, especially making tropical fruit desserts and other homemade dishes. My favorite colors are blue and green. I have been retired since 2012. My wife and I will offer you all the love and warmth that characterize us as Cubans, as well as support in answering any questions and sharing our experiences.

Our home is a second-floor apartment in a three-story building with nine apartments. The apartment has three bedrooms, and the room assigned to the student ensures complete rest. It is very comfortable and well-ventilated.

Regarding meals, we have accumulated experience over the years and always tailor the menu to specific diets, ensuring it meets your tastes, needs, and preferences. We have always strived to make your stay pleasant and to make you feel like part of the family, in your own home. It will be our pleasure to meet your expectations and help you learn about our idiosyncrasies, culture, customs, and Cuban cuisine. You will always be welcome in Cuba and in our homestay family.

Wilfredo & Isver

My name is Wilfredo Arias, and I live in the Marianao municipality of Havana. I am 56 years old. My family and I have been part of the homestay group since its inception, welcoming students from various universities in the United States who come to study in Cuba. My family consists of my father, my sister, and her husband, who live on the ground floor of our house. On the upper floor, I live with my partner, Isver Sardiñas, and our dog, Negrita.

The two of us are responsible for the care and attention of the students during their stay in Cuba. I work as a pharmacy technician, and my favorite colors are light blue and green. We both love the sea, theater, and music.

In our home, we provide all the love, companionship, and support you need, along with a comfortable room for your rest. At our table, we strive to offer the best meals, tailored to your tastes and dietary needs.

It will be a pleasure to share our experiences with you and offer you the best of our customs and culture. Welcome to Cuba!
